Invested in your first Yoloha Yoga mat? There are certain steps you can take to ensure the longevity of your mat. In this article, we'll share everything you need to know to get the most from your yoga mat.
The most important thing to remember is that Yoloha mats are made from cork which is a natural material. For this reason, it is imperative to take proper care of your mat to avoid any damage that could potentially impact the cork, the grip and your practice.
Here’s how you can care for your mat to keep it in optimum condition:
Tip #1 Roll your mat with the cork facing outward
This is vital for the health of your mat. It will protect the cork and prevent it from creasing or cracking. We recommend rolling it up loosely to avoid it curling under at the edges. Never fold your mat either!
Once your mat is rolled properly, try one of our carrying straps or mat bags to easily transport it from one place to the next.
Tip #2 Clean your mat with Yoloha’s All Natural cleaner
It is important to clean your mat after every use, especially after every sweat. Give your mat a generous spray with an all natural cleaner and then use a cloth to wipe down the mat. Be firm, but gentle to avoid damaging the cork.
Steer clear of cleaners with harsh chemicals as they can damage the cork (beware of sprays offered in studios). Our organic cleaning sprays are made with therapeutic grade essential oils for a wonderfully scented and detoxifying spray experience. They are both body and mat safe for daily use and come in recyclable glass spray bottles.
Tip #3 Leave your mat laid out flat to dry
Once you spray your mat, leave it laid out flat to dry. If you need to roll it up to transport, simply unroll it when you get home. This will allow the mat to dry completely and avoid any oil building up and impacting the grip.
Leaving your mat laid out flat often will also help keep it as flat as possible for your next practice!
Tip #4 Avoid Direct Sunlight
Practicing in the sunshine for an hour or so is totally fine, however, leaving your mat in direct sunlight for long periods of time can warp the shape of the mat. This will stop your mat from laying flat.Try one of our mat bags to keep your mat protected from the sun.
Additionally, we don’t recommend leaving your mat in excessive heat. Beware of leaving your mat in the car where it can be exposed to both the sun and excessive heat.
