Dani Monroe is an active member of the fitness community in Charleston, SC. With a bachelor’s degree in Health and Exercise Science, she has cultivated a passion for kickboxing and bootcamp style classes that focus on strength and stability. She is now a certified coach at Grit Box Fitness in West Ashley, where she facilitates Technique Kickboxing classes that draw inspiration from Muay Thai, combining the use of fists, elbows, knees, and shins. Dani likes to incorporate yoga into her workouts where she can and tries to practice mindfulness in her daily life. Dani wants to bridge the gap between yogi’s and other athletes, motivating all individuals to live fearlessly!
We connected with Dani and spoke about movement, life and more. . . Here’s what she had to say...
What experience brought you to teaching/coaching?
I grew up playing sports so fitness has always been a part of my life. When I moved to Charleston I became a lululemon educator and was encouraged to get out and sweat in the community. I came across GRIT BOX Fitness and the rest is history. I was brought on as Cody's (owner and founder) assistant and have been wearing all the hats since then. I didn't see myself as a Studio Manager of a boutique fitness studio 5 years ago so I truly believe that everything happens for a reason.
What style of movement do you teach and where?
At GRIT BOX our Kickboxing is Muay Thai based, which is also known as the "art of eight limbs" as it is characterized by the combined use of fists, elbows, knees, and shins. We combine our Kickboxing with Strength exercises to get a HIIT workout unlike any other. We have a studio in West Ashley as well as Downtown.
What certifications do you have?
I have a Bachelor's degree in Health & Exercise Science as well as a GRIT BOX Fitness Coach and Rock Steady Boxing certification. Rock Steady Boxing is a fitness-inspired program to help people fight back against Parkinson's Disease. It's definitely my favorite certification thus far.
How did you discover Yoloha and what do you love about it?
I discovered Yoloha from another friend in the fitness community, Mitch. His girlfriend, Sarah, is a huge part of the brand as well. He asked me to do a workout to try out the mats and I've been a huge fan ever since. It's hard to find a mat that is not only durable but can also be stable enough to handle high intensity movements such as jumping. I love what Yoloha stands for and the inclusivity of welcoming practices outside of yoga.
What is your favorite Yoloha product and why?
My favorite produce is the Unity Mat. It's designed for every practice and it's super light weight. It's also very easy to clean which is great for sweaty people like me :D
Who in your industry do you look up to? Who motivates you? Really, we want to know who we can check out, support and follow!
I'm a huge fan of Massy Arias (@massy.arias). She's a health and fitness coach in addition to being a single mom! Her workouts are creative and results-driven. She's made a brand of herself and I respect her hustle so much
Other than working out, what is your favorite way to take care of yourself
Besides working out I like to R&R at the beach. Nothing is better than the salt water and the sound of the ocean. If I'm not at the gym you can catch me on the beach :D
What is your go-to mantra/power phrase?
I'm not one to stick to one mantra but my current mantra is "Level Up". I'm at a point in my life where I want to challenge myself to be better both personally and professionally.
What song pumps you up for your workout?
My go-to song is "Pop That" by French Montana. No matter what style of workout you're doing this song will get you HYPE and in the mindset to get after it!
Talk about something that challenges you.
I have a really hard time being vulnerable. I tend to bottle things up until it overflows. I recently read "Untamed" by Glennon Doyle which has changed my perspective on being emotional. Would definitely recommend it to anyone out there who hasn't read it before!
During this time of the #BlackLivesMatter movement, what are your thoughts on how the yoga & fitness community can be more supportive, inclusive and ultimately create change?
I believe that having more representation in leadership positions would be huge. I only know a handful of black gym owners, studio managers and coaches and we need to help make that change.
What fuels you to keep showing up for yourself and others?
My family fuels my fire. They give me endless support and love. At the end of the day I know I can count on them
Keep up with Dani!
